Ancient peoples applied brass to produce this type of musical instruments and that is why the notion “brass” appeared and is still used today. Copper and silver are widely used in production of these instruments nowadays. And some musical instruments with the same method of sound producing were made from wood some centuries ago. Hunting bugles, military horns and post pipes were the ancestors of contemporary brass instruments. Valve mechanism wasn't created at that time and those instruments could play only natural scale. Various timbres of sounds were produced only with the assiatence of lips of a player. At that time also fanfares and other signals of hunting and military destinations appeared. The natural scale was the foundation of these sounds and people began to use them in musical practice.

The pipes of different sizes and shapes appeared with the increasing of metal working that made feasible the productions of brass instruments. Also people invented the notion of natural instruments. It happened due to the development of brass instruments and the improvement of different natural scales playing. There were no valve mechanisms, that is why such musical instruments could produce only natural scale. It was the age when brotherhoods of pipers began to appear. There were two kinds of them: martial pipers and chamber trumpet-players that played heavy parts in hard high register.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century was invented valve mechanism. The art of performing was changed owing to this novelty and the possibility of scales was heightened. The crown that was included to the basic tube changed the form of instruments and lowered the pitch.
